John A.Riolo,PhD(licsw)

Who am I? Over thirty years ago, I entered the helping professions as an advocate for the homeless. I soon moved on to clinical practice, obtaining a PhD and to higher education with a hand in research. I have worked for psychiatric hospitals, HMOs clinics, colleges and in private practice But wherever I worked and whatever the specific responsibilities I have always combined clinical practice with advocacy in one way or another. I happen to believe that good clinician practice and advocacy can and in fact must go together. I believe that to be helpful one must address someone’s private troubles, however every private trouble is also an example of a public issue. Doing one without the other is only half the job.

For the past few years, I put my emphasis on advocating for my colleagues in private practice. Often this was in opposition to managed care practices and sometimes, I was trying to motivate our own professional organization to do more for it’s members. However I realized while those things are important, my energies were misplaced. The consumer comes first. Often, that means advocating for the consumer even if it means opposing some of your own colleagues and friends. I concluded that before we could be true advocates for our patients/clients we needed to take a hard look at ourselves. I therefore set up a website in the form of an e-book designed to alert consumers of therapy to some of our “trade secrets”. What the consumer tells us should be confidential. What we do and how we do it should be an open book. So I am writing to give the consumer an insider’s perspective, whether on my website, radio show or my column, The Insider, published on PsychJourney.com.

The Insider is a natural extension and complement to my e-book, which is available at no charge to consumers, students and anyone at http://www.ric.edu/jriolo.
