ABOUT OUR HOST:    TOP

Tina Steele is no stranger to broadcasting and the media: Her stepfather, Peter Haigh, was a notable BBC radio and television celebrity, and her mother, Jill Adams, an actress of stage and screen. Even her grandmother, Molly Adair, was a silent screen film actress, who appeared in the very first Blue Lagoon, and her grandfather, A.J. Siggins, a statesman and author of books such as "Shooting with Rifle and Camera". He was the one responsible for nurturing the political animal that Tina has become!

The Vietnam War saw Tina marching to bring an end to the senseless loss of life. She waved banners to stop apartheid. She voted as soon as she was legally able. She walked 20 miles to raise money for disadvantaged children. She volunteered at a home for the severely developmentally disabled, and ran errands for the elderly. Tina was and is into causes!

Raised in the hallowed halls of the BBC, and the soundstages of the British Film industry, show business was always in her blood. However, Tina eschewed The Industry for many years, preferring to focus her attention on life as a wife and mother, then, as a single mom, solely upon surviving. It was only when she moved permanently to the US in 1991 that she decided to launch herself upon a new career, which involved going back to school, and then for something fun to do interning at a hard rock station, which she had chosen because the program director asked if she wouldn't mind doing remote broadcasts in bars and handing out condoms. Tina thought that she had died and gone to heaven. The station hired her 3 weeks into her internship.

Having switched her major to broadcasting, Tina raced through a BA in 3 years (with honors), and took a year off to work at a job she absolutely hated. She continued to work in radio throughout this time, and co-hosted her own show, did overnights, and promotions. The pay was terrible. Politically, she was active in state and local campaigns for candidates who were pro-choice, and all Democrats!

An inherent need to help people was the guiding principle behind her decision to enter the Ph.D. program in Applied Medical (Clinical) Anthropology, at the University of Buffalo, and where her masters' thesis was on alternative and complementary therapies for people living with HIV and AIDS. She had been involved in caring for those with the disease since it first reared its ugly head in the 80's. She finally relinquished working in broadcasting whilst in graduate school, but it was never far from her heart. Politically though, she was just getting into gear...Bush had taken the White House and she was NOT happy.

Forced to graduate with only a Masters degree, but unable to afford a lawyer to sue, Tina had no choice but to seek employment, which resulted in her going into AIDS research management, where she stayed for 2 years and sat on 2 national committees. NY winters finally drove her south, where she briefly ran an HIV prevention program for an entire state. And, then she came full circle and found herself back in radio, after starting her own health and wellness counseling and consulting business. "Being Well: health alternatives in a mainstream world" began airing on LadyBugLive.com in 2004. In the meantime, she stood on the steps of the capitol and waved banners to protest the upcoming war with Iraq, and joined a plethora of online activist groups. She supported Howard Dean.

Having moved to Florida, and found that the state wanted nothing to do with people without lots of money, Tina's activism took on a life of its own. But, when Al Gore lost in 2004, she thought that life was no longer worth living.

Once over her depression, though, Tina once more girded her loins for the fight. Joining the local Democratic Party, she decided that change needed to happen from within. She's still working on that. Then came the idea for 'Blue Lips" and a chance to rant at the corrupt political machine that has this country by a choke hold. Her inaugural show launched August 31, 2006, with the award-winning journalist Greg Palast, whose NY Times Bestseller "Armed Madhouse" was the subject of discussion.

Apart form trying to change the world, Tina volunteers at a clinic serving low-income seniors, is a member of the medical reserve corps, and sits on an advisory council for an agency for the disabled. She is also trying to discover some way to make some money and put a roof over her head! Suggestions would be welcome!

Write to Tina!
